Police Officer Employment Requirements

 

Please review the following requirements before applying for the position of Police Officer.

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, born or naturalized

  • Must have a minimum of 45 college credit hours; or four (4) years of police officer experience; or military experience with an honorable discharge not more than two years from the date of application.

  • Must pass the polygraph, psychological, B-PAD, physical agility, interview with Chief of Police, background, and medical exam.

  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving morale turpitude or domestic violence.

Drug Use
Use of any drug or controlled substance, or any violation of the following restrictions will be cause for elimination from the application process:
  • Any sale of a controlled substance.

  • Marijuana; no use within the previous two (2) years.  No more than twenty (20) times total or more than five (5) times as an adult.

  • Barbiturates; any use within the last five (5) years disqualifies an applicant.  No more than one (1) use in lifetime.

  • Speed/Methamphetamine; any use within the last five (5) years disqualifies an applicant.  No more than one (1) use in lifetime.

  • Cocaine (powder); any use within the last five (5) years disqualifies an applicant.  No more than one (1) use in lifetime.

  • Crack; any usage disqualifies applicant.

  • LSD, Heroin, Opium or any derivatives of Heroin or Opiates, Rohyphnol; any usage disqualifies applicant.

  • GHB; no use after 1996 or being classified as an illegal drug.

  • Hash; any use in the past five (5) years disqualifies applicant.

  • Steroids; no more than one (1) cycle in a lifetime.  Any use in the past five (5) years disqualifies applicant.

  • Quaaludes; any use in the past five (5) years disqualifies applicant.  No more than one (1) use in a lifetime.

  • Prescription drug abuse; to be determined on a case-by-case basis.  Any purchase of prescription drugs not prescribed to applicant disqualifies applicant.

  • Alcohol use; no conviction for any alcohol related offenses (D.U.I., Disorderly Intoxication, etc.)  No current or past addiction to alcohol, unless in successful and continuous treatment and remission for the past sixty (60) months.

Driving History and Vehicle Operation
  • No more than five (5) moving violation(s) within three (3) years of the date of application.

  • No more than three (3) at-fault motor vehicle accidents within three (3) years of the date of application.

Tobacco Use
  • The Police Department prefers that anyone who applies for the position of police officer not have used any tobacco products within the last one (1) year of the date of application.

Law Enforcement Certification Requirements
  • Non-certified applicants:  Applicants who have never been certified by FDLE as law enforcement officers will be required to attend a Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Prior to attending the academy the applicant will be required, by the Law Enforcement Academy, to successfully complete both the Basic Abilities Test (BAT) and the Physical Agility Test.

  • State of Florida certified applicants:  Applicants, who have been certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) as law enforcement officers, are not required to complete the Basic Aptitude Test (BAT). However, they must complete the physical agility test.

  • Other State certified applicants: Applicants who are certified as a law enforcement officer in a state other than Florida, and have one full year of employment, will need to attend the Comparative Compliance course.  As with those applicants who attend the Basic Law Enforcement Academy, these applicants must also complete the Physical Agility Test (PAT).

The successful completion of a Law Enforcement Academy certified by the State of Florida is a requirement of the Delray Beach Police Department for employment in a sworn officer position.
